A Seven-Year Journey

One of my interests in watching television is the true story reality shows. The Learning Channel has several shows that provide that. One is "Toddlers and Tiaras" which I spoke about in a previous post. Another show that caught my attention was "My 600-lb Life" featuring individuals who are overweight. The show first reveals how they lived before and now speak of what they want out of life before actually having their surgery. Then the show follows their seven-year journey while losing their weight and the struggles that come their way.

The first story featured Melissa, who had weighed 653lbs. The episode shows Year 1, and how Melissa spoke of how scared she was from having the surgery but thinking that she would definitely benefit from it. She lived with her husband who took care of her for six years because of her being overweight and she couldn’t do anything for herself. She was always sad and never wanted to leave the house. She spent all of her time sitting in her chair and she never got up from it. She knew she wasn't healthy. She was tired of being overweight. She knew it was time for a change.

After receiving the surgery, Melissa felt somewhat different but she knew she had a long way to go to get to her goal of reaching the weight of 180lbs. She was determined. After she started losing more weight, she was happy that she was able to move around. She was happy that she was making progress and started feeling better about herself. That progress went on for Years 2-4. She had learned how to drive and was happy that she was able to actually fit in a car with no problems. She had taken a long overdue trip to visit her family. She was able to finally fit into a pair of jeans which made her so happy, she started crying.

Year 5 showed the problems that Melissa wasn’t eating right and doing too much exercise. She ended up in the hospital and stayed there for 3 months. When she felt better, she was able to go home. Year 6 showed that Melissa had gotten pregnant but due to complications, she had lost the baby. They had tried again and were successful. But then the issue of gaining weight while being pregnant came up. She was scared but then she gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl.

Year 7 now shows Melissa weighing 207lbs, who is working for the clinic as a counselor and helping others with the same weight issues as she had. She is making a difference in others’ lives and trying to help them through the rough road that they will face just as she did.
