Lifetime Movie Network is a channel that features movies based on or inspired by true stories. One movie that I watched was "Girl Fight." The movie follows a 16 year old girl, Haley, who befriends a group of girls who are popular. She enjoys the attention she receives from hanging out with her new friends. She gets the feeling of belonging and what its like to be popular herself. Unfortunately, at times, something too good turns out bad. Due to criticism that Haley posted on her social networking page about her new found friends, the girls had found out about the comments that were made and were enraged by what Haley had wrote about them. The leader of the group, Alexa, couldn't believe that she trusted Haley enough to be her friend and then to find out the mean comments that were written. Alexa was furious and decided not to be Haley's friend anymore. Haley didn't understand why Alexa was upset with her. She immediately went to Alexa's house to talk to her. The four other girls were there waiting for Haley and stating their feelings of anger towards Haley's mean comments. They decided that when Haley got to the house, they were going to teach her a lesson. As soon as Haley arrived, the five girls were waiting for her as soon she walked through the door. Haley knew there was something wrong. The girls confronted Haley about the comments she wrote and then Haley tried to apologize but it was too late. The girls quickly started to hit her and beat on her. All the time she was getting beaten, the fight was being videotaped on a cell phone. The entire beating was recorded. The beating went on for hours and there was nothing Haley could do about it. Once the girls were done beating on her, they drove Haley to a parking lot and just dropped her off. She was found by a shopper who took her to the hospital. Haley's mother and father were furious and shocked that their daughter had gone through this. They wanted the girls to pay for what they did. But Haley wanted to forgive and just make sure the girls got sentenced a lenient time for their punishment. The girls only received probation and community service.
The moral of the story is to not stoop to the level of the guilty party. When the whole fight started with revenge and rage, Haley didn't want it to end that way. She wanted to be the better person. Haley was very brave to want to let it go.
For me, the worse part of the whole situation was the video of the beating. Teens think its so cool to show these videos on the internet. They think it will make them popular and liked by everyone. It doesn't make them look cool, it makes them look stupid. They'll have that image of being a bully from now on. They will be known as the five girls who beat up on a poor girl for no good reason. They laughed, acted tough, and didn't care what they did to her. But then it was funny to see these five girls who were supposed to be big and bad, sitting in the courtroom scared and wondering what their punishment would be. Is that the whole reason? Are these teens just really scared and they don't know what they are doing?
